22nd Jan 25 11:40 am

The US President Donald Trump has issued Vladimir Putin with a warning of additional sanctions if he does not negotiate a peace deal with Ukraine.

The Trump administration is developing a comprehensive set of sanctions with is designed to find a resolution to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, Bloomberg reports.

Trump was asked by a reporter if he will impose additional sanctions on Russia should Putin not come to the negotiating table, the US President said this “sounds likely.”

It has been reported the Trump administration is looking at two approaches, the first is if there is a resolution they will look at good faith measures which will look at benefiting the sanctioned Russian oil producers to get a deal over the line.

The second option involves expanding the sanctions to put maximum pressure on Moscow, the Kyiv Independent reports.

The Kremlin has said they are open to talks with Washington, but only if the “root causes” are addressed by the US President.

Putin spoke with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in an online meeting, the Russian leader said he is “open to dialogue” with Trump.

The Kremlin reported that Putin said, “We are also open to dialogue with the new US Administration on the Ukrainian conflict.

“The most important thing here is to eliminate the root causes of the crisis, which we have spoken about many times, this is the most important thing.”

Putin said, “As for the settlement of the situation itself, I would like to emphasize again: Its goal should not be a short truce, not some kind of respite for regrouping forces and rearmament with the aim of subsequently continuing the conflict, but a long-term peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people, all nations living in this region.”

On 26 December 2024 Lavrov said, the illegitimacy of the Kyiv administration led to the “oppression” of Russian culture in Ukraine, the Kyiv Post reports.

Lavrov continued, “And they must address the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis. The two main ones are, firstly, the violation of all obligations not to advance NATO to the east and the aggressive ‘absorption’ by NATO of the entire geopolitical space up to our borders.”

“… The second root cause is the absolutely racist actions of the Kiev [sic] regime after the coup d’etat. Then, the extermination of everything Russian was officially permitted and then legally secured: language, mass media, culture, even the use of the Russian language in everyday life.”

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov warned that there is a period of uncertainty over the relationship between Washington and Moscow.

The senior Russian diplomat said, “I think the next period will be characterized by not just a substantial number of challenges, but also the increased pace of changes and a high level of uncertainty, including in broader international relations and specifically on the platform of our dialogue with Washington.”
