A brand new survey from Office Freedom has revealed that over 30% of British workers are demanding the legal right to automatic overtime pay for working late and a right to switch off – after BBC’s Panorama exposed the backlash of returning to the office.

Lord Rose, former chief of Asda and Marks & Spencer, criticised the rise of remote working, claiming it’s caused a decline in UK productivity and economic wellbeing. Speaking to BBC Panorama, he said that working practices have regressed by 20 years in just the last four, following the pandemic.

Just how much workers believe they have a right to hold sway over bosses is evident in Office Freedom’s survey, with over 30% demanding a right to switch off and automatic overtime pay to be made into law. The survey also revealed that 29% of workers demanded a right to work from home, coinciding with the Labour Party’s Employment Rights Bill, where workers will be able to request flexible working from their first day of employment.

“Richard Smith, CEO and founder of Office Freedom said, “It is clear the pandemic has permanently transformed the way we work. Working from more flexible workspaces, on more flexible terms, is now the way forward as we see more and more companies transitioning from traditional inflexible leases to flexible and customised ready-to-move-into serviced and managed office solutions.

“Quality of life at work has become a key factor for employees when choosing a job, which is why employers are embracing amenity-rich flexible workplaces which foster productivity and wellbeing, in order to attract and retain talent.”
