cinch, the UK’s biggest online retailer of used cars, has released new data highlighting how UK car-buying behaviour shifted during the cold snap.

Comparing filtered searches from the week beginning 6 January to the previous week, cinch found that searches for SUVs increased by 20.5%.

Four-wheel drive cars also saw an uplift, with an increase of 44.6% and heated seats searches also increased by 20.5%

The data highlights how extreme weather conditions can rapidly change – from more safety (four-wheel drive) to more comfort (heated seats).

Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, added, “The freezing weather that carried over into the new year has been a wake-up call for many drivers, with a realisation that their cars aren’t completely fit for purpose.

“Searches for four-wheel drive cars are up nearly 45%, and with more cold weather around the corner, it’s safe to say the trend towards winter-ready motors will probably continue.”
