On Tuesday Volkswagen has warned President Donald Trump against “harmful economic impact” of tariffs he is proposing on imports from Mexico.
Mexico is where Volkswagen operates a major factory and the German car maker is already under financial pressure with high costs and China flooding the market with cheaper cars.
Volkswagen is saying there is major uncertainty following President Trump’s threats to place 25% duties on goods coming from Mexico which could start from 1 February.
“The Volkswagen Group is concerned about the harmful economic impact that proposed tariffs by the U.S. administration will have on American consumers and the international automotive industry,” a Volkswagen spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.
“We value collaboration and open dialogue. The Volkswagen Group looks forward to continuing its longstanding and constructive partnership with the U.S. administration,” the spokesperson added.
