EE launched on Thursday the first ever 5G network in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Manchester and Belfast.

The new internet speeds are many times faster than 4G however, only a select few of EE handsets are 5G capable and there will be challenges for customers.

Vodafone will launch there 5G in July across seven cities and competition in the market will increase, contract prices for the high speed 5G are considerably higher.

The lowest priced 5G deal with EE is £54 per month with a one of fee of £170 for a compatible handset, this only provides the user with 10GB of data a month.

On Thursday evening Hollywood actor Kevin Bacon will hit our TV screens alongside genuine Watford fans, and a family of lifelong Manchester City supporters in the latest EE campaign.

Pete Jeavons, marketing communications director at BT and EE said, “We wanted to support the launch of 5G in the UK with an equally ambitious campaign. To be the first network to launch 5G in the UK is a huge moment for the brand and we wanted to demonstrate all the possibilities that 5G can unlock for our customers – from augmented reality to virtual reality.

“In this latest campaign, we’ve worked with real people in real time to showcase what’s possible on real 5G networks. Rather than tell them a 5G story, we let them become the story.”

Rob Baillie, mobile comms expert at CompareMyMobile said, “It’s definitely true that today marks a great step in the right direction, but it will still probably take some time before 5G is commonplace and most people are able to make the most of it.

“Unless you are absolutely desperate to switch to the faster network, it would make a great deal more sense to wait until more networks are offering the service so that you can take advantage of competitive deals, as well as allow for any teething problems to be overcome.”
