Donald Trump has pulled the US out of the World Health Organization (WHO) claiming that they mishandled the Covid pandemic.
President Trump said that they failed to act independently from the “inappropriate political influence of WHO member states.”
He said the organisation “continues to demand unfairly onerous payments from the United States, far out of proportion with other countries’ assessed payments,” citing China.
On Monday Trump said, “World Health ripped us off, everybody rips off the United States. It’s not going to happen anymore.”
He added that they “wanted us back so badly so we’ll see what happens,” suggestion a possible return in the future.
Speaking to the BBC, Lawrence Gostin, a global public health expert and Georgetown University professor said, “It’s a cataclysmic presidential decision. Withdrawal is a grievous wound to world health, but a still deeper wound to the US.”
