Councillor accuses Labour of ‘abuse of the elderly’ by draining their funds

3rd Jan 25 4:05 pm

A councillor has launched a blistering attack against Labour their treatment of pensioners slamming their policies.

Cllr Patrick Hamill of Leighton Buzzard accused Labour of draining the funds of elderly people who have worked so hard all their lives.

Cllr Hamill told GB News, “They’ve allowed the cat to stay at No10. Other than that, Labour have done absolutely nothing.”

He added, “I think they’re going to drain the funds of elderly people that work so hard.

“I can give you an example. My mother-in-law had £70,000 in the bank, when she went into care, they stripped the £70,000 and on top of that, they started on her house.

“My mother-in-law worked all her life. She fought in the war, and she never, hardly ever drank a drink of alcohol, never smoked, always worked hard, and paid for everything when she needed to.

“Then we have the Winter Fuel Allowance. I mean, what has this Government got against the pensioners that have worked so hard for this country? What have they got against them?”

Cutting the winter fuel payment for 10 million pensioners has coast taxpayers £380 million as the government has seen a surge in benefit claims, according to analysts.

GB News reports the Chancellor claims the government can save £1.4 billion a year, however as there has been a surge in pension credit claims Rachel Reeves plans has backfired.

In 2024 the government paid 1.35 million households £5.5 billion and new retirees are claiming the benefit for the first time.

Since the Chancellor made the decision to axe the winter fuel payment the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has seen pension credit claims more than double.

Former Pensions Minister Sir Steve Webb said, “There is no doubt that the surge in applications for Pension Credit will reduce the savings from this policy, potentially costing the Government more than £200million per year in benefits for pensioners.”

Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride told The Telegraph, “Labour’s approach to the increased poverty they are creating is to encourage more pensioners to apply for Pension Credit. But that is substantially eroding the savings.”

“Means testing the winter fuel payment is a dreadful decision. The Government’s own figures show that it will mean tens of thousands of pensioners being plunged into poverty,” Stride added.
