Taiwan on ‘high’ alert as China deploys warships around the island

Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense has reported on Monday they have raised their military alert level to “high” as China has deployed almost 90 naval vessels around the island.

Taiwan‘s Ministry of National Defense said there has been significant military presence by Beijing near to their waters, the East and South China Seas and the southern Japanese islands.

A Taipei security source confirmed that two-thirds are warships and China’s Foreign Ministry has warned they will “firmly defend” their sovereignty.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said that Taiwan is an “inalienable” part of China and they have established seven zones of reserved airspace, Taiwanese officials warned.

Taiwanese military said they have launched an emergency combat readiness exercises in response to Beijing’s “enemy threats.”

Taipei has warned Beijing against “unilateral and irrational, provocative actions” as this would damage peace and stability in the region.

The defence ministry added Beijing’s military actions “will not be welcomed by the international community” in the Indo-Pacific region.

On Friday the Taiwanese President William Lai told Beijing, “Raising your fists is not as good as opening your hands.”

He added, “No matter how many military exercises, warships and aircraft China sends to coerce neighbouring countries, it cannot win the respect of any country.”

In October the Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said that over a 25-hour period they detected a record 153 Chinese warplanes flying around the island in a simulated blockade.

Chinese fighter jets, warships, drones and Coast Guard vessels carried out a one-day military exercise.

Of the 153 warplanes 111 crossed the Median Line, which is a demarcation point for the Taiwan Strait, Beijing does not recognise this.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said they deployed their aircraft and naval vessels to monitor Chinese military activity.

Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te said that Taiwan is “not [a] subordinate” to China and Beijing “does not have the right to represent Taiwan,” CNN reported.

The Chinese Communist Party claims Taiwan belongs to China and it will be “unified” with Beijing and if they have to the Chinese military will use force over their territorial claims.
